A film nearly a decade in the making
On October 9, 2025, Burning Tears (Lágrimas de Fuego) film by Fabiana Cantilo opened in Argentine cinemas — the debut feature written and starring by Fabiana Cantilo, one of the most iconic voices in Argentine rock. The film was produced by Lahaye Media together with Crep Films, and distributed by Apima Distribución. Direction was entrusted to Gabriel Grieco, a seasoned filmmaker whose previous work has screened at festivals including Cannes, Sitges, and Fantastic Fest.
The original concept dates back to 2016, when Cantilo began drafting a screenplay rooted in personal experiences. Nine years of development shaped a dramatic comedy with autobiographical undertones that fuses fiction with the world of rock — a combination that draws on the creative depth of everyone involved in the project.
The story: from confinement to reconstruction
Burning Tears follows Laura, a woman who, after four years in a psychiatric clinic and struggling with a phobia of fire, decides to reclaim her life. Spirituality, music, and close friendships become the pillars of her recovery, as she also tries to reconnect with her daughter. The film moves between drama and humor with the sensibility that defines Cantilo’s work: dense and playful at once, as she herself described the script ahead of the premiere.
The cast reflects decades of ties within the Argentine arts scene. Cantilo is joined by Gastón Pauls, Inés Estévez, Viviana Saccone, Andrea Rincón, Pipo Cipolatti, Julia Zenko, Magui Bravi, Dan Breitman, Claudia Puyó, Sergio Boris, Lula Bertoldi, Marilina Bertoldi, Fernando Noy, and Santiago Montes de Oca, among others. The original score was composed by Fabiana Cantilo and Marisa Mere.
The avant-premiere and theatrical release
On September 17, 2025, the avant-premiere took place at the Centro Cultural 25 de Mayo in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Villa Urquiza. The evening brought together musicians, actors, and figures from the cultural world who came to celebrate a genuine milestone in Cantilo’s career. The atmosphere was one of collective emotion: for many in attendance, the project represented years of shared conversations, shoots, and collaborations with the artist.
Three weeks later, on October 9, Burning Tears opened commercially in cinemas across Argentina. The film runs 85 minutes, is rated for audiences 16 and over, and was shot entirely in Buenos Aires.
